Scott & White Hospital - Brenham Diabetes Center's is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
The Diabetes center provides quality one-on-one and group diabetes education. It is located at Wellness Center, 2111 South Day Street, in Brenham.
The ADA Education Recognition effort, which began in 1986, is a voluntary process that assures that approved education programs have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.
Recognized programs have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management.
Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. One benefit of compliance with the National Standards is the greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered.
ADA education programs cover the following topics as needed: diabetes disease process; nutritional management; physical activity; medications; monitoring; preventing, detecting and treating acute complications.
The programs also cover: preventing, detecting and treating chronic complications through risk reduction; goal setting and problem solving; psychological adjustment; and preconception care, management during pregnancy and gestational management.
Scott & White Hospital - Brenham Diabetes Center is the only ADA-recognized program in the Brazos Valley area.
Many health insurance plans and Medicare cover the cost of the education programs. Education through the program should be ordered by a physician or other healthcare provider to qualify for insurance or Medicare coverage.
Karmen Cunningham, RN, BSN, CDE, is a certified diabetes educator and is the coordinator or the Diabetes Center at Scott & White Hospital - Brenham.
The Diabetes Center's programs are overseen by a board of healthcare professionals including a physician, a podiatrist, a dietician, a social worker a community member and nurses.
The Diabetes Center also offers a free weekly refresher class/support group for those wanting additional information and assistance.
