Diabetes Education Center

The Diabetes Education Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The Diabetes Education Center provides quality one-on-one and group diabetes education. It is located at the Wellness Center, 2111 South Day Street, in Brenham.

The ADA Education Recognition effort, which began in 1986, is a voluntary process that assures that approved education programs have met the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.

Recognized programs have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management.

Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. One benefit of compliance with the National Standards is the greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered.

ADA education programs cover the following topics as needed: diabetes disease process; nutritional management; physical activity; medications; monitoring; preventing, detecting and treating acute complications.

The programs also cover: preventing, detecting and treating chronic complications through risk reduction; goal setting and problem solving; psychological adjustment; and preconception care, management during pregnancy and gestational management.

The Diabetes Education Center is the only public ADA-recognized program in the Brazos Valley area.

Many health insurance plans and Medicare cover the cost of the education programs. Education through the program should be ordered by a physician or other healthcare provider to qualify for insurance or Medicare coverage.

The facility has a certified diabetes educator (CDE) on staff to provide education for patients.  The Center's programs are overseen by a board of healthcare professionals including physicians, a podiatrist, a dietitican, a social worker, a community member and nurses.

The Center also offers a free weekly refresher class/support group for those wanting additional information and assistance.
